MOU Signed with Ministry of Health of Vietnam

On Tuesday, November 18th Operation Smile signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Department for Health Service Administration within the Ministry of Health of Vietnam to jointly increase equitable access to safe, well-timed and effective surgical care within Vietnam.

Vietnam, like many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs),
faces
challenges in developing and sustaining systems to deliver safe, well-timed, and effective surgical care. The recent focus has been on the implementation of public health programming to address common infectious diseases, but the appreciation for surgery as a necessary element of universal health coverage continues to develop within the global health community.

Since 1989 Operation Smile, in partnership with the Government of Vietnam has been providing surgery to children across the country that suffer with surgically correctable facial deformities. Through this partnership there has been a rich exchange of techniques and approaches to patient management that has benefitted both parties. In November of 2014 the partners signed a MOU to continue to partner to provide treatment to children in need as well as partnering to develop programs to increase the availability and access to safe surgery in Vietnam.

The goals of the partnership are to bring together thought leaders to address challenges in providing safe surgery, to establish a baseline for current health system surgical capacity and performance and to mobilize new resources to support strategies for increasing surgical capacity.  An initial stakeholders meeting is planned for the beginning of 2015.
